Forest restoration in Mexico is crucial for:
1. Ecosystem and Biodiversity: Trees support a wide range of species, aiding in biodiversity conservation and ecosystem balance.
2. Climate Change Mitigation: Forests absorb carbon dioxide, reducing soil erosion and the impacts of climate change.
3. Conservation of Unique Species: Regions like Veracruz are biodiversity hotspots with unique flora and fauna, needing protection from high deforestation rates.
4. Community Involvement: Involving local communities in restoration, especially women, helps preserve traditional knowledge and supports local livelihoods, while combating climate change.
Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Puebla, among Mexico's poorest states, are rich in Indigenous culture and traditions but face high poverty rates, with 69.5% of families living in impoverished conditions. These communities often face marginalization in broader Mexican society. Our partner, Plant With Purpose, supports these regions by helping Indigenous farmers restore their land, reducing the need for poverty-driven migration. This involves promoting regenerative agriculture and leveraging local Indigenous crop cultivation knowledge. The initiative enables healthier diets, improved access to education, healthcare, and financial stability through savings groups. Regular workshops across these regions help spread knowledge and foster community collaboration.
Our partner, Plant With Purpose, operates in Oaxaca, Puebla, and Chiapas, regions characterized by significant marginalization and a high concentration of indigenous communities. These states are also notable for their exceptional biodiversity, housing some of the most endangered habitats globally.
Our partner’s program encompasses 10 watersheds and has established 319 savings groups. It actively involves 4,359 families, impacting a total of 18,571 people. In collaboration with 98 church partnerships, we have successfully planted 1,165,571 trees, contributing significantly to environmental restoration and community development.
